Day 1 of SEA-Teacher in the Philippines
Today marks the first day of my SEA-Teacher SEAMEO Project Practicum in the Philippines. I started today by looking at the dormitory, the conditions are very comfortable and the staff is also very friendly. In the afternoon I also saw the area around the campus which was very spacious with the facilities available.
One of the challenges I encountered today was the language barrier. Although I have learned some basics in the host country's language, to convey broad conversation is a bit difficult. But I noticed that some of the host country languages have words that are similar to Indonesian. I am excited to improve my understanding of Tagalog.
After dinner, I had the opportunity to interact with one of the UST students who gave me insight into campus education and culture. The students here are very friendly and I learned some greetings in the local language Tagalog. I believe it is important to learn the local language and culture to be able to connect with one another.
Experience interacting with local students is very useful. Even though they and I have language difficulties but we try to learn from each other. I am very aware that language skills are very important to add to my relationships and insights as an educator. I am excited to learn the local language and culture throughout the program activities.
Overall the first day of the SEA-Teacher SEAMEO Project Practicum was a daily activity, I was able to learn to recognize the campus area and gain insight into the local culture and language.
